To the young adults coming out of high school I suggest you consider not going directly into college if your only access to higher education is through massive student loans. The current state of the education system fails to provide young adults with the experience necessary to understand themselves and the world they will be entering while encouraging them to make financially risky decisions thanks to quota driven budgets.
Consider these two (extreme) scenarios:
You can come out of high school an adult (legally if nothing else) and your first decision will be to buy an education via a loan you will pay over the next half of your life for a trade you probably have little exposure to and may not like. The cost of making such an uneducated decision? Unhappiness and more wasted money correcting the mess left in the wake of it.
OR
You come out of school aware that you don’t understand the world first-hand and so you get a job to make ends meet. Over time you take workshops and research different interests as you encounter them. Eventually you understand what you want to do better than before and with the money you put asside working (don’t forget that) you pursue the future on your own terms.
But it’s your choice, your life, your money. Is attending a cheaper community college so bad when it’s all you can afford? So do well and scholarships will pay but if not then beware. Debt can enslave you (legally).
